Healthy Neighborhoods/Healthy Kids
The City of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic began the HN/HK project in 2007-08 in partnership with Vermont Institute on the Caribbean. In two schools hundreds of youth developed a vision for an ideal community and a good quality of life. Then they researched what they could do to improve their community. Working with city council, parent-teacher organizations, and community partners, they have begun a process of cleaning up their neighborhoods, educating community members on what they can do to improve their community, and sharing their thoughts with elected officials. This project is the first of its kind in the City of Puerto Plata with plans for expansion into more schools each year.
